Joseph Warton, The Dying Indian

You can find the reading for Friday's class here. "The Dying Indian" is actually the second poem on the PDF--the first is a similar poem by Warton on a related theme. We probably won't be discussing it in class, but you may find it interesting.

Both poems are from one of the first widespread anthologies of contemporary poetry, Robert Dodsley's A Collection of Poems in Several Hands, which ran to six volumes and ran through many editions and reprintings in the mid- to later C18. Dodsley's Collection included the survivors (Samuel Johnson and Thomas Gray), a few women (but none of the female survivors), and some poets who have been so thoroughly forgotten that we no longer know who they were in the first place. Joseph Warton is not that obscure (he's on our roll call!), but he didn't make the short list.
